Boeing in Snohomish County
Notes/History
- Snohomish County's economy is thriving thanks in large part to being the home of
industry giant Boeing's 747, 767, 777 and 787 Dreamliner assembly plant. - The engine and interior are sold separately from the jet
- The county owns the airport and the runway land, not Boeing. Snohomish
leases it to various non-commercial airplane companies. Boeing only owns
the assembly plants - The Boeing Company was founded by William E. Boeing around 1903-1910
- A member of the Boeing family has not worked in the company since the
1930s - The only living Boeing member left is William Boeing Jr. He is currently 92
years old (In 2013) - Since the 1950s, when commercial Boeing jets were released to be
purchased by the public, it is a Boeing tradition to put a 7 at the
beginning and end of every model - The parts for the jets are not produced in the Snohomish County assembly plant; the jets are only
assembled there - There is a special jet just for carrying the wings and other parts of the Dreamliner (787) from the country
where they are manufactured to the plant in Everett called the Dreamlifter
William Boeing - On October 1st, 1881, William Edward Boeing was born in Detroit, Michigan.
- "Now I would say that people want to ride in airplanes more and more each day - and I shall go so far as to say they will someday regard airplane travel to be as commonplace and incidental as train travel... We are trustees of a veritable revolution that is taking place once more in the economic, social, and political fabric with the advent of this new speed medium." -William E. Boeing, 1929
- In 1916, William and George Westervelt formed the Pacific Aero Products Co. When World War I started in April 1917, the company's name was changed to The Boeing Airplane Company and filled the United States Navy's order of 50 planes.
